Empty every drawer, separate personal items, and measure the dresser against the narrowest part of the route. These steps reduce weight and prevent surprises on stairs.
Empty means completely empty
Check under drawer liners and behind removable drawers. Jewelry, documents, hardware, and small clothing items are easy to miss. If drawers lift out without forcing stops, set them aside in a stable stack. Leave unfamiliar drawer systems in place for assessment.
Measure the case and the turn
Record width, depth, and height. Then measure doors, hallways, stair width, landing depth, and low ceilings. A dresser carried on its end may fit a door but still lack space to rotate on a landing. Note solid wood, stone tops, and built-in features because they affect weight.
Dresser preparation list
- All drawers and compartments checked
- Loose drawers stacked safely
- Mirror detached only if the fittings are clear
- Dimensions written down
- Stair turns photographed
- Route cleared of rugs and décor
List mirrors separately
A matching mirror is a fragile piece, not part of the dresser count. Photograph its mounting points and describe cracks or loose edges. Review the full dresser removal scope before requesting an estimate.
